The photo above depicts a hearth extension, which was required when this Jotul gas stove was installed. Based on the limited size of the hearth, the manufacturer’s clearance requirements would have necessitated the use of metal baffles to re-direct the heat from the stove. However, by extending the hearth, the stove was able to be moved the correct distance away from the overhanging mantle, without using the need to install metal baffles.
For this job, I obtained southern yellow pine, to match the mantle and the nearby post and beam lumber instead of brick because the stove did not require the legs to be standing on a brick hearth. I used a radial arm saw to miter both corners of the 3-sided extension.
